What happens when a real virus hits the internet

Over the past few years, speculations about SARS, “Bird Flu”, “Swine Flu”, H1N1 and other potential pandemic viral events have been making headlines.  Not only are there shortages of vaccines, but the potential for quarantines still exist.  Most businesses haven’t made plans for this event.  The costs to businesses in terms of productivity and time lost will further drive a wedge into both the top line sales and bottom line output.

Most companies will try to rely on remote access solutions in the case of a quarantine scenario.  Picture 10’s of millions of workers going home to their DSL and Cable connections and trying to log on to your office.  The first problem with this is that the current internet carrier networks are built on the principle of over subscription.   They assume that only 1 out of every 10 or 20 users that are “always on” the internet will actually be using it.  It is like a highway that has three lanes in each direction.  At normal traffic rates, you do not notice delay.  When 10 times the number of people try to get on the highway (such as a holiday weekend or after a sporting event lets out), you definitely notice the impact.  Internet networks are no different than expressways.  There isn’t a magic knob that one can turn to improve the amount of bandwidth.  There will simply be congestion and poor performance throughout the internet.

Secondly, if you use Vonage or another VOIP service in your home or office, it will be completely obliterated.  Don’t plan on doing any voice calls for days or weeks.  If there is a quarantine scenario, you will receive email at a very slow rate and your voice calls will be non-existent.  Go to the library and get a good book and stock up on some Blockbuster/NetFlix rentals.

If you happen to depend on your Blackberry or i-Phone for data transmissions, they too use the internet for transport.  Good luck with that.  Better have plenty of apps downloa
